The new year is upon us. What do people do at the beginning of a new year? Well there are typically two camps. One that makes new year resolutions and one that avoids them like the plague. Which camp are you in?
Goals
In our home we don’t necessarily do the typical new year’s resolutions, but we do sit down and pray through our goals for the year. We look at our spiritual life and see what areas we want to grow in. What aspects of God do we want to learn more about? How do we want to grow in our relationship with the Lord?
Mental Goals
For mental or educational goals we all pick one, maybe two, areas we want to focus on. Maybe we want to learn something new or maybe just focus on getting better at one thing that always seems to be a struggle. Sometimes it is a book to read. Other times it is seeking help to improve.
Emotional Goals
Then we look at our emotional life. Emotions are good, they are indicators that we need to do something. Once they have done their job, then it is time for them to move on and leave. Each one of us prays and asks the Lord if there is something in ourselves that we need to continue to work out with the Lord. Anxiety is frequently identified. Other emotions we tackle are anger, criticizing, and being more positive. We think about the emotion(s) that sometimes come in and control us and then we work with the Lord to figure out how to bring those emotions under control and allow God to lead us in those areas.
Physical Goals
The last area we look at is physical. God gave us one body and we are to take care of it. We think about how we are taking care of our body and if there are any adjustments we want to make in the new year. Sometimes we list a fun skill we want to learn or get better at. You never know when your pickleball skills will come in handy!
2022!
As we turn the corner into a new year my mind has been thinking about all the different goals I want to achieve in 2022. This excites me and brings me hope that 2022 will be a good year. A year of growth. This is all good. It is needed to become and do all that God created us to do.
